How to choose an acoustic guitar.
( sources : Wikipedia, Emma music, Gibson, Guild ) - Form
The 2 most popular : Dreadnought and Jumbo.
Dreadnought form was created in 1916 to provide a wider and richer sound.
With a Jumbo form, sound is stronger because of its size. Country bands use it.
Soundboard
made in spruce, or thuya (not cedar), or mahogany.
Spruce is a bright wood which becomes yellow when getting old.
More closed are the wood ligns, better 'll be the sound.
The best qualities : Adirondack and Sitka. No bow 'd be found.
Bright, dry, crystal-clear sound. Rich in the high notes at all levels if graining is very dense.
Tuja is a black wood crackproof, so very used. Powerful, round sound, rich in the basses notes.
Back and sides
In rosewood, mahogany and maple tree. The best one is Brasilian wood. Indian wood is used as well.
Rosewood provides a stronger and more powerful sound than mahogany and maple, with brightness and deepness in basses notes.
Mahogany provides a particular sound. (and the whole soundboard could be made in mahogany as well in this case)
Maple provides a crystal-clear sound, little basses, brightness in medium, and great high notes
Fretboard
in mahogany or maple tree.
Fingerboard
in rosewood or ebony.
Ebony is better resistant to temperature gaps.

Changing strings.
Put the string in tailpiece. A string badly fitted out can slip and guitar goes out of tune constantly.
Insert string at the bottom of the hole.
Spin round 2 or 3 times for E, A, D and 3 times at least for G, B, E clockwise.
To prevent slipping when tuning, at first put again the string underneath and go back before tightening.
The string 'll lock as it winds, thus it 'll prevent slipping. Then tune up the guitar
Start with the 1st and 6th strings, then the 2d, 5th, 3rd, 4th.
You 'll get a balance pressure over the bridge and tune 'll be faster.
Check the tune at the 12th fret : it'd be harmonic.
If sharp, move bridge toward tailpiece. If flat, move bridge toward fingerboard.
Here is a summary of strings gauges for acoustic guitar.
(in dark : Brass )Truss rod.
Remove cover at top of the headstock. Put a capo at 1st fret. At 14th fret, hit the E-low string.
Measure distance between 5th fret and the underside of the low E. You need 0.15 mm ±0.5 mm.
Remove capo. Check out distance at 12th fret of low E : 2.16 à 2.36 mm.
Proceed with the E-high string : 1.78 à 1.98 mm.
Check distance at 1st fret of E-low string : 0.56 mm ±0.05 mm.
Check distance at 1st fret of E-high string : 0.51 mm ±0.05 mm.
To tighten, screw clockwise as shown.
Bridge adjustment
See this site : FRETS
In this website, you'll find out many subjects about guitar adjustment.
Videos
Here are some videos which 'll give you a very good idea.
But ask a professional guitar maker. All adjustments are mutually dependent.
Tunings
( See a very good synthesis in Wikipedia )Standard tuning is EADGBE :
E + fourth ⇒ A + fourth ⇒ D + fourth ⇒ G + third ⇒ B + fourth ⇒ E
Many guitar players chose these Open Tunings.

To get chords in a quick way, go to Guitare-Live or see them in the following table :
(sharp = # - flat = ♭)
Remarks :
You can notice that :
Gm7 = B♭6 Dm6 = Bm7 5-
Am7 = C6 Gm6 = Em 7 5-
Dm7 = F6 Am6 = F#m7 5-
Em7 = G6
For instance : Am7 = 1 3♭ 5 7♭ ➔ A C E G and C6 = 1 3 5 6 ➔ C E G A
Also : Dm6 = 1 3♭ 5 6 ➔ D F A B and Bm7 5- = 1 3♭ 5♭ 7♭ ➔ B D F A
On some scores, you could see 2 chords separated with /
It's a reversed chord ⇐ (chord / bass).
Ex : G ( G B D ) is G B D G B G ➔ 3 2 0 0 0 3
G/B 'd give x B D G D G ➔ x 2 0 0 3 3. Also G/D 'd give x x D B D G ➔ x x 0 4 3 3

Pentatonic scales
5 fifth based on C scale. (see fifth circle) ⇒ {C , G , D , A , E} ⇐ 3.5 tones between.
On neck, pentatonic minor scale is a combination of :
positions 1, 2 : {A , C , D , E , G}
position 3 : {C , D , E , G , A}
position 4 : {D , E , G , A, C}
position 5 : {E , G , A , C , D}
position 6 : {G , A , C , D , E}
For pentatonic major scales, 1.5 tones are removed.
{C, G, D, A, E} ⇒ {A, E, B, F#, C#}
On Neck, you get {A, B, C#, E, F#}
Hope my explanations are more simple and clear that you could read elsewhere.
May I suggest you to buy Les cahiers du blues from Jean-Jacques Rébillard.
Expensive but it's worth it.
You should download this ebook. Very useful.
Power chords
Power chords are mostly used in saturated electrical sound, indeed heavy saturated.
2 notes are mostly used ( root and fifth ) and 3 notes ( root, fifth, octave ) as well. See Flash for C5.
Inasmuch as you respect the previous instructions, many other possibilities are offered.
Watch out the strings muted. ( x in example )
By translating on neck, you'll get (D5, E5 , F5, G5, A5, B5).
Most used power chords at top of the neck are :
Open G : DGDGBD
You could see most of them by Stovermusic
Tips to tune to Open G E(6) A(5) D(4) G(3) B(2) E(1) :

notation : Fx = F##
To respect construction we note E# (= F) et B# (= C).
To get the key of a score, first watch the beginning of the tab, you 'll find the classic G key, followed with accidentals # or ♭ (7 max).
Order (F, C, G, D, A, E, B) for # and (B, E, A, D, G, C, F) for ♭.
(Note the opposite sense)
The number of accidentals gives key.
Without accidental, you get C major or C major -1.5tone = A minor.
To find the key, just add 1/2 tone to the last # note OR take the next to last ♭.
(If only one ♭ you get F major or D minor)
Examples :
2# so F and C ⇒ tonality C# + 0.5t = D major or B minor
2♭ so B and E ⇒ tonality B♭ major ou G minor.
To know if it's in minor mode, watch out if 7th of key has a # or ♮.

I bought the Roland Boss DR-880 rhythm box, supposed to be a very good one.
I went through some tough moments when trying to install this box using an usb cable under Windows 7 pro 64 bits. I was stuck even I followed instructions step by step.
Proceed considering that follows.
In book page 124, heading Before using USB, you need to set up the right USB mode on the box before install. Follow instructions.
Choose Midi to get then a painless install.
For Windows 7 64 bits, get the driver.
Proceed installation of the driver in admin mode using setup.exe
Don't plug in the usb cable and don't turn on the box until the install program has said it.
Resonators
Here are some images of John Dopyera 's patent (1928-1930) for the tricone.
Rights have been credited to George Beauchamp, his first partner
Resonator guitar is very often named Dobro (this is wrong).
Instead, Dobro is Dopyera Brothers 's brand.
To get full story and meaning of « Biscuit » et « Spider » ? see acoustic finger style.
Don't miss Wikipedia.
Difference between resonators has been described here.
Pay a visit to this site relating the history of metal-made guitars.
A very good paper about a French guitar maker at Vitry sur Seine : Fine Resophonic, close to Paris.
To clean the metallic parts, use a soft duster and white vinegar.
For persistent stains, use a metal restorer (except for a vintage brass resonator).
You could apply then a carnauba wax as for car. (from Nationalguitars)
My guitars
- A resonator Recording King MT30.
- 1 Framus 6 strings acoustic guitar.
- 2 Framus 12 strings acoustic guitar.
- 1 Welson 12 strings acoustic guitar.
- 1 Gibson B.B. King Lucille Ebony ARLCEBGH1 (type ES345).
- 1 Fender Precision Bass Artist Roger Waters.
To extend to 5 years the Fender warranty, go to Fender.
Serial number is written at the top of the neck and this bass is referenced as 014-7000-306
- 1 mandolin banjo 8 strings (1927). I didn't learn how to play it.
Blackstar HT5 amp & multi-effects pedal
This great little lamps amp (push-pull) is perfect to use in a house and it sounds loud. In a flat, better using an headset. HT5R model has gotten Reverb, unuseful if you use an effect pedal.
You got a CLEAN sound pretty banal, an interesting overdrive with ISF which allows to move from US sound to british sound. (In fact, an HT-dual pedal embedded).
This HT5 amp uses "momentary" technology to change canal (clean / overdrive). If you use another footswitch that the one Blackstar gave, you have to set it to 'momentary' instead of 'latch'.
You could get output to external loudspeakers, emulated, ...
On backside you get a serial effect-loop, rather scarce on a small amp.
The 2 lamps are : 12BH7 for pre-amp and 12AX7 (ECC83) for main amp.
Improvement :
- Some people recommend to put a 12AX7 (7025 Highgrade) lamp from TAD (Tube Amp Doctor) to get a warmer sound.
Other people recommend to replace 12AX7 with a 12AU7 to get a crunch sound (max gain) instead of ultra-lead.
I have read that :
12AU7 (ECC82) : gain 17
12AT7 (ECC81) : gain 60
12AX7 (ECC83) : gain 100
(lamp 12 AX7 Tung Sol is not advisable : too much medium, no grain)
You need to adjust the polarization circuit as soon as you change the power lamp.
See bias settings.
- In 2009, some amps got problems with the effect-loop.
A fixup has been published : The loop moved right after the volume adjust.
- The backside of the combo is opened. Some people suggest to replace the loudspeaker with a Celestion G10 Vintage.
The new amps got a 12" loudspeaker instead of a 10".
I use a pedal effect ToneLab ST with this amp.
It wasn't so easy to set the right connections to get the best sound effects results.
3 connection types are workable :
• Guitar → Input amp ; Send loop amp → Input Tonelab ; Output Tonelab → Return loop amp
⇒ Pedal is between preamp and HT5 amp.
Result : big snoring. (gain trouble because of 2 pre-amps serial setting ?)
• Guitar → [ Input Tonelab - Output Tonelab ] → Input amp
⇒ Sound ok but nothing special.
• Guitar → [ Input Tonelab - Output Tonelab ] → Return loop amp
One enters straightly in HT5 amp and pre-amp is shunted. Tonelab is the pre-amp.
Sound and effects are warmer, but take care of gain for UK Rock, UK metal, US highgain, US metal, Boutique metal amps settings otherwise the loudspeaker 'll rumble.
I chose this connection. I switched Amp on Line (backside of Tonelab) and attenuator to -10dB (HT5 loop).
As a matter of interest, I quote another type of connection, unfortunately impossible with Tonelab ST : 4 cables method.
You need a multi-effects console with a loop :
Guitar → [Guitar In console]
[FX send console] -→ Input amp
[send loop amp] -→ [FX return console]
[output console] -→ [input loop amp]
For more informations , see this video published by Line6 for a POD HD500.
On Voxamps.com, you can download ToneLab ST Librarian and ASIO / USB pc driver as well.
You must choose the usb port to connect the pedal and always plug it to.
An USB printer cable allows connecting Tonelab ST to computer. By default, you'll get the 0-49 programs. (user programs)
In main directory, a double click upon TLST_PresetProgram.tlst 'll display the 50..99 preset programs.
The file TLST_ExtraProgram.tlst give you many other examples. (in 0...49)
The method to set up some examples isn't practical at all. Here it is :
- Connect effects pedal with USB cable to computer.
- Switch on Tonelab.
- Run ToneLab sound librarian. Programs 0..49 are displayed.
- File → Save or CTRL S to save 0..49 if you put any changes.
- File → Open → TLST_ExtraProgram.tlst Programs 50..99 are displayed.
Supposing you want to replace programs 0..49 by 50..99
- Click line 50, then the others to get orange color from 50 to 99. → CTRL C to copy.
- Go to line 0. CTRL V to replace ⇒ The whole 0..49 have been replaced.
- Then File → Close File or CTRL W.
- File → Transmit. Message Executing... is displayed.
- Close program. Now you have gotten extra programs from 0 to 49 and factory preset programs from 50 to 99.
You could also change only one effect. For instance, line 18 has to be replaced by line 62.
Be aware that if you use CTRL to select 2 (or many) lines not adjacent, the copied lines 'll be pasted together .
Ex: 63 , 74 , 85 selected → mouse over line 11 → CTRL V → llines 11 , 12 , 13 are replaced by 63, 74, 85.
But it is not an editor !
I found out a website where an editor for Tonelab ST has been carried out : robig.net or download STlab I got.
This great program allows to change effects as you could do it on the Tonelab.
If in 'Toneroom', you got sound effect (tlp or tllp extensions), I found out a converter to read these files: TonelabConverter.
Wireless system
Willing to play from everywhere in my home I decided to buy a Getaria 5.8GHz gear thanks to an Amazon bargain
It works fine without detectable latency both for bass guitar and for electric guitar with ToneLab ST.
We can charge the 2 items (transmitter and receiver) thanks to a Y wire.
With the frequency 5.8GHz there is no reciprocal risk of interference with wifi and other 2.4Ghz systems.
